The Effect of Emotional Labor on Job Stress, Burnout and Job Satisfaction of Hospital Nurses

Abstract

|
Objective : This study aims to examine the level of emotional labor of hospital nurses and to investigate its effect on the job stress, burnout and job satisfaction.
Methods : The sample used in the study consisted of 275 nurses selected from a university hospital located in Wonju City, Korea. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires from November 4 to 11, 2011, and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 Program.
Results : First, factors related to the nursing supervisors and work environment were found to have significant effects on the level of emotional labor of hospital nurses. Second, variables of emotional labor and psychological affectivity were found to have significant effect on the job stress of hospital nurses. Third, it was found that variables of emotional labor, psychological affectivity, duty type, and volume of patients had significant effect on the burnout of hospital nurses. Fourth, variables of emotional labor, psychological affectivity, duty type, and emotional quotient were found to have to significant effects on the level of job satisfaction of hospital nurses.
Conclusion : The results of the study imply that formal and informal support of hospital administrators as well as nurse managers are encouraged to reduce the level of emotional labor of hospital nurses.
